Aftercare in a Sober House

According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, continued counseling and training is a great way to prevent relapse. A sober house is an excellent place to start a solid aftercare program. Most sober houses have a variety of aftercare programs to help you transition from an intensive program back into your normal life. There are a wide variety of aftercare programs to choose from.

Life Skills Training

Life skills training involves adaptive behavior training as well as things like:

  • Social skills
  • Cooking
  • Personal care
  • Self care
  • Other adaptive skills

In sober house aftercare, life skills training often involves finding out who you are without the drugs or alcohol. Self discovery is an important part of recovery.

Job Training

Aftercare

Some sober houses offer job skills training, such as resume writing.

Some sober houses offer trade or job training programs. These can be certification programs such as:

  • Culinary arts
  • Basic home skills
  • Some partner with technical and trade schools

Many of the programs also offer more basic skill such as:

  • Interviewing skills
  • Resume writing
  • How to look for a job

Individual Counseling

Counseling is always a part of sober living aftercare. You will still maintain counseling sessions with either your therapist or a therapist from the sober house. The counseling involves dealing with the transition between using and living sober as well as other aspects of the drug addiction.

Group Counseling

Group counseling is usually a part of sober housing. In group counseling, you normally attend counseling with the other residents in the house. People normally share their issues with the house at a house meeting but share their addiction during group counseling sessions.

12 Step Programs

Many sober houses offer 12 step counseling as well as group counseling. If they do not directly offer it, the sometimes offer transportation counseling. Since some people do not like 12 step programs, some sober houses just stick to traditional group counseling.

Coping Skill Training

Coping skills are an important part of aftercare. Coping skills training gives you the opportunity to learn how to deal with things like triggers and cravings. Some focus on stress and dealing with stressful situations.

Self Esteem Counseling

Self esteem is severely affected by addiction. Many times low self-esteem is the cause of the addiction. It is important to make sure that it does not continue to be an issue after you are sober.

Care for Other Illnesses

Part of aftercare is care for other illnesses. If you are suffering from chronic pain or a mental disorder, it is important to make sure that this treatment continues. Drug or alcohol addiction is sometimes a form of self medication. Aftercare often gives people the opportunity to receive treatment for these disorders.
