Enrichment Activities Offered in a Sober Living House

According to the National Library of Medicine, sober houses are an excellent way to take some time and learn new things before you reenter society. Many people think that sober houses are places where the residents only engage in counseling and nothing more. Fortunately, they are wrong. Sober houses have a variety of enrichment activities that you can take advantage of.

Craft Working

Craft working is very therapeutic and calming. Most sober houses have some form of arts and crafts. There are thousands of forms of crafts that you can engage in. It is all a matter of what interests you at the time. It keeps your mind and hands busy.

Gardening

Upkeep and gardening is not only beneficial for the client it is beneficial for the grounds and the house itself. Although the idea that a sober house is a desolate piece of property in the middle of nowhere is a popular one, many of them are well landscaped and grow their own food.

Art Therapy

Like craft working art therapy is a form of both counseling and therapy. When comes out in the art is just as important as the process of doing it. Art therapy is one that has been in use since the earliest forms of psychology and psychotherapy.

Water Therapy

Enrichment Activities

Exercise therapies such as hydrotherapy can be offered in sober living programs.

Hydrotherapy is one of the more common forms of exercise therapy. This is usually only found in warmer climates.

Music Therapy

Like art therapy the act of making, processing, or listening to music helps to calm the mind and as a form of counseling. It was also used in the more modern forms of psychology as a calm influence on institutionalized patients.

Self – Esteem Building

Self-esteem building is one of the more common activities. The idea that substance abuse and low self-esteem go hand in hand is nothing new. Low self-esteem is a precursor to substance use and substance abuse.

Life Skills

Life skills are an obvious choice as an enrichment program. Some people lack the basic skills to be able to:

  • cook a basic meal
  • balance a checkbook
  • shop efficiently
  • decide on good things to eat
  • deal with credit and banks

A surprising number of people do not know these basic things. Addicts are even less likely to understand the basic skills needed to live.

Job Skills

Like life skills many people lack basic job skills, like resume writing and interviewing skills. These are skills that are normally picked up early in life but for some reason are not.

Job Training

Some sober houses offer basic job training or they may help you get into a certification program for job. There are usually job coaches, employment coaches, and education advisors available to those living in sober housing.
