Finding Local Sober Homes

The great choice about moving into a sober house is that an individual can reside in one that is far away from his former area of residence or move into one that is close by. For those that want to be in an area closer to their family, looking into sober homes in the local area may be the answer. Even if an individual may not be ready to move into their former home, they may still want to be living in the local area. The goal to stay clean and sober, and find support while they adjust to daily living may be all they need.

According to the U.S. National Library of Medicine, sober living houses have many advantages, including eliminating the need for residents to move back into questionable living environments that may not support their recovery. Residents can decide when they are ready to transition into more independence, and move out of the sober house.

If you or a loved one are not aware of any sober houses in the local area, there are several ways to finding some that may be considered local or as close to your area as possible. Some of the ways to find a sober home closest to your neighborhood or city area include:

  • Online: You can search online for sober houses that may be located in your area, or as close by as possible. There are various terms you can use to search for them such as by city, zip code, or other similar search terms. The easiest method would be an online resource that can provide you with a listing of sober homes in just about any area, and that can also provide helpful information regarding sober houses.
  • Rehab centers: The recovery program that you or a loved one may be attending can be helpful in providing information regarding sober houses in your local area. A sober house may not necessarily be available in your neighborhood, but there may be one in your city. Rehab centers may have a listing of all the ones closest to you.
  • Detox centers: Detoxification centers for substance use may be helpful in helping a person locate a local sober home. Some of these centers only specialize in detox, and then refer an individual to a recovery program for drug abuse treatment. However, many have other resources aside from recovery programs, such as referral to local sober living houses.
  • Health practitioner: The family doctor that regularly tends to your medical needs may also be helpful in helping you or a loved one located a local sober house to contact.

This list may not be complete. There may be other ways to locate a local sober home that you can contact. Searching the yellow pages of your city is another way. A family member may also know of one. Some churches provide their community with many resources for individuals suffering from addiction to alcohol or drugs, and may have information on sober houses in your area.

What to Consider Before Contacting Local Sober Homes

Just because a sober home may be located in your city does not mean it may be the best choice for you or a loved one. If the sober house you located seems to meet your goals, and you are eligible to apply for residency (such as gender specific), it is recommended you meet with the house manager and visit the house, and possibly meet some of the residents.
