Christian Sober Living

Christian sober living is an extension of another form of substance abuse treatment, often itself Christian in nature. Recovering addicts may not have gained the skills they need to stay sober in the “real world” after they’ve checked out of a treatment program. Christian sober living homes provide a safe and supportive environment in which recovering addicts can adjust to living the sober life and transition back into the community.

About Christian Sober Living

The main difference between Christian and secular sober living homes is that Christian sober living stipulates that residents live by the principles taught in the Bible and by the examples set forth by Jesus Christ. Christians believe that the Bible teaches one everything he needs to know in order to live a clean, healthy, and sober life.

Christian Sober LivingAside from these guiding principles, Christian sober living communities are not very different from other sober homes. They often have similar rules and consequences, and their end goal—to help recently-sober addicts transition back into the community—is the same. But in addition to the common rules and amenities found in most sober living communities, Christian sober living homes often provide access to the following options and activities for their residents:

  • Bible counseling
  • Bible studies and other Christian study groups
  • volunteer work in the church community
  • guidance and support through a 12 step recovery method

Whether addicts are coming to Christian sober living from a secular or a religious treatment program, the skills gained in Christian sober living will teach them how to live a sober life while being a strong member of the Christian community.

Should You Consider Christian Sober Living?

Not surprisingly, Christian sober living homes require residents to believe in and follow the Christian principles. This is not to discriminate against non-believers, but it allows like-minded individuals to feel safe and supported as they work to incorporate the teachings of Christ into their treatment and sober lives.

Recovering addicts should also truly want to get clean and sober, and they should be willing to make every effort to stay that way as they progress through the transitional stage. This is true of both secular and Christian sober living homes, but the added rules and requirements of a Christian sober living home should also be taken into consideration. Addicts should be willing, for example, to go through the 12 step recovery method if it’s required by a particular home.

Christian Sober Living Provides a Safe Haven in the Final Stages of Recovery

For men and women in the Christian community, Christian sober living is available to recovering addicts who need help adjusting to life outside of treatment. Christians may not feel as open or welcome in a secular sober living home, but being part of a Christian sober living community may be the answer. Christian sober living homes will help addicts to gain the life skills they need in order to return to their lives—clean, sober, and enriched by the teachings and principles of Christianity.
