Relearning How to Have Sober Fun

Sober fun… For years you may have thought it an oxymoron. After all, being sober wasn’t what you thought was fun and you may’ve even thought those activities and the people who engaged in them were lame.

But you were wrong.

Now that you’ve given up drugs and alcohol, it can feel like you’ll never have fun again. But you can. And if you try, you will. If you’re suffering from addiction and ready to seek treatment, call 800-953-3913 (Who Answers?) today to talk to someone who can help you find your way to recovery.

Here are a few ways you can get back into the swing of things and relearn how to have sober fun.

Pick Up an Old Hobby

Whether it was bowling, knitting, or skeet shooting, at some point in the past, you had something you liked to do. And there’s no better time than now then to pick up that old hobby and start enjoying it again.

So dig out your shoes and ball from the basement, dust them off and head to the lanes. To make it even more fun, call up some old friends you used to do your activity with. Tell them the truth and let them know that you’re getting back into the hobby and looking for company. Old friendships often spark back up quickly and now you’ve got something to do and someone to do it with.

Find Something New

Sober Fun

Hiking is a healthy and fun sober activity that many people enjoy.

If you want to pick something new, there are millions of things out there for you to do, you just have to pick one and try it out. If you find that you don’t like it, that’s fine. Pick something different next time.

Try yoga, fly fishing, or needlepoint. Maybe flag football, rock collecting, or hiking would be a better fit. Baking, crossfit, and poetry are all options, too. Regardless of what you choose to do, there are definitely thousands of things you can find that you enjoy while being sober.

Enlist a Friend

What do your friends like to do? Paddle board, carve ice sculptures, take photos? Explain that you’re looking to try something new and ask if you can tag along. Who knows? That person may also be into something you’ve always wanted to try or never considered and invite you to come along next time they go.

Fake It

At first, nothing may be fun. You may be so preoccupied by how lame it is not being high, that you can’t let go and enjoy yourself. Instead of being the guy who ruins the party, fake it.

Pretend you’re having a good time. And you know what? Chances are if you play along and let people think you’re having fun, soon, you’ll be having a blast and not even realize you’re not faking it any more.

Are you suffering from addiction to drugs or alcohol? Are you tired of life being unmanageable? If so, call 800-953-3913 (Who Answers?) to talk to someone who can help get you the treatment you need today.
