Did you Know that there are Actually 6 Types of Sober Housing?
According to the National Institute on Drug Abuse, there are many types of treatment for drug and alcohol abuse. The type of treatment depends on the level of addiction and the addict themselves. In almost all treatment models, aftercare is highly recommended. One form of aftercare is sober housing. Sober housing is a way for you to transition from inpatient or intensive care to a more relaxed but still sober atmosphere. There are several different types of sober housing.
Sober Dormitories
Sober dorms are one of the first steps in sober housing. This is communal living with other people who want to remain sober. Most sober dorms are restricted to one sexual orientation. Most people who just come out of inpatient rehab or corrections start off in sober dorms. Most sober dorms have 24 hour staff and only allow those living there to leave for doctors appointments or other necessary trips. Like all sober living arrangements, you will get kicked out if you return to the house intoxicated.
Sober Houses
Sober houses are similar to sober dorms but the in a normal residence. In a sober house you are required to take classes, attend counseling or doctor’s appointments, and other life improvement activities. You are allowed to come and go during the day but they have a curfew for the residents and you usually have to clear where you are going.
Sober Apartments
Sober apartments are one of the most relaxed types of sober living arrangements. Sober apartments are just like regular apartments. You might have a roommate but there are separate bedrooms. This is usually the last step before you are living on your own and the situation in which you have the most freedom. You have all of the freedom of living in an apartment except you attend counseling and doctors appointments as you learn to live on your own.
Re-entry Housing
Re-entry housing is one of the first sober steps many people make after they leave prison or a long term inpatient facility. Most re-entry programs focus on sobriety and learning how to live in the outside world again. Re-entry programs are generally very strict and carefully monitored. Re-entry programs are a way to gradually ease your way back into society.
Halfway Housing
A halfway house is the same as a sober living house with one exception. The exception is you are half way between a locked facility and a normal living situation. Half way houses tend to be more strict than sober houses.
Transitional Houses
In transitional housing, you move from a controlled situation to one where you have almost complete freedom. The housing is provided so you can get back on your feet before you are on your own. You can maintain a job and come and go as you please. Many people attend counseling sessions while they are in transitional housing.
